One car which seemed to typify this was the Datsun 120Y (Sunny B210). The UK 120Y range consisted of a two-door Saloon, three-door hatchback, Coupé, four-door saloon, five-door Estate and a three-door Van. They were all powered by the same 69bhp 1171cc mated to a four-speed manual gearbox with the option of a three-speed automatic on the two- and four-door saloons.
